Christopher Columbus Replica Ships Field Trip

Yesterday, we went on a field trip to see two replicas of Christopher Columbus's ships: The Niña, and the Pinta. They were in Newport, Kentucky on the Ohio River. The Niña was Christopher Columbus's favorite ship. It was the smallest, but also his fastest ship.

I learned that they didn't have bathrooms on the ships, so they had to go over the side into the ocean. Instead of toilet paper, they used a rope. There was a tiny cannon on the poop deck. (The name "poop deck" comes from the French word "la poupe," which means the stern or back of the ship.) It was never used for fighting, it was used to signal with other ships. It was called a signal cannon. I also learned that Christopher Columbus never learned while he was alive that he had discovered a new land. He always thought it was another part of the Indies.

Me on the poop deck of The Pinta.

Abigail trying out the windlass. The windlass pulls up the anchor.

Looking into the hold of The Niña.

A sword in the hold of The Niña. My sister Abigail said,"Look, Nathaniel! It's glorious! A real sword!"
